TSCM - Technical Surveillance Counter Measures

What is TSCM?

 Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM)

  • Purpose: To protect sensitive information, privacy, and critical infrastructure from being compromised by technical means such as hidden eavesdropping devices or digital surveillance.
  • How it works: Professionals use specialized equipment and techniques to conduct "bug sweeps" in environments like corporate offices or government facilities to find and neutralize surveillance devices.
  • Methods include:
    • Analyzing radio frequencies (RF) and identifying signals
    • Using thermal imaging to detect heat signatures from active electronic devices
    • Performing network and device analysis to identify vulnerabilities

Common Places They’re Found

Hidden cameras tend to appear in:

  • Short-term rentals (Airbnb, VRBO, etc.)

  • Public restrooms or dressing rooms (illegal almost everywhere)

  • Private residences (used by some for nanny monitoring or security)

  • Workplaces or stores (for theft prevention — typically disclosed)

  • Hotels — rare, but it has happened

Legality

  • Hidden cameras are legal in private property you own if used for security and not placed in areas where people expect privacy (bathrooms, bedrooms, etc.).

  • It’s illegal to record someone without consent in private or intimate settings in most jurisdictions.

Counter-Surveillance & Privacy Protection

  • Sweep for hidden cameras, microphones, or GPS trackers (called a TSCM — Technical Surveillance Countermeasure inspection).

  • Help clients identify whether they’re being watched, tracked, or recorded.

  • Advise on privacy and digital security improvements.
